I'm so excited to be joining the #2getherwearebetter classroom reveal party today! My students went back to school last week, so I've had plenty of time to take some pictures.<br />
<br />
This is what my room looked like when I walked in for the first time near the end of summer. All the furniture was in the front of the room where I left it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKJpgE71qclnPiIRq8D0sAAC1OmV6eGMX-_OvOeeRUmxLDG9JlaTjbbZ8OPpjMQZBFYk8RvqDa2u-Apx6ZJslJcESBn49pNwYjVy0Zx0H2N7ata6-fIsteGj47pln-a8KOtMEGozmu5KE/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKJpgE71qclnPiIRq8D0sAAC1OmV6eGMX-_OvOeeRUmxLDG9JlaTjbbZ8OPpjMQZBFYk8RvqDa2u-Apx6ZJslJcESBn49pNwYjVy0Zx0H2N7ata6-fIsteGj47pln-a8KOtMEGozmu5KE/s320/Slide1.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I spent a little time in my room before I officially had to go back. All I did that day was set up the desks and move the furniture into place. I didn't want to spend too much time there because I wanted to soak up my last few days of summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Xo0Rw14aox9KputH85hhkiCA7ue7mPlpdiHcDbf32DC4E9W39KT6bIGp38fxxj-DePoOegUmMbkOghyfHBNpzVoidflMrf3hb6PJcG5eRXVNu7gxTWMOQsiXnseJdbcK_oYz_V4qkhY/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Xo0Rw14aox9KputH85hhkiCA7ue7mPlpdiHcDbf32DC4E9W39KT6bIGp38fxxj-DePoOegUmMbkOghyfHBNpzVoidflMrf3hb6PJcG5eRXVNu7gxTWMOQsiXnseJdbcK_oYz_V4qkhY/s320/Slide2.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Look how neat everything looks!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib9m_YPYGyJ8Q-3Oo4pM-dIWRfJ6Vl0BJN4Fz9pm7J9XAzjSUjKalEGmBHGGd4iFHQqOzawLZFT3yY7tB7HJKLMGUJyKoZYnuYq5U-cCnBxX4tQcb1BgPho3HbW8Vcc76K0B-st4RmJ0c/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib9m_YPYGyJ8Q-3Oo4pM-dIWRfJ6Vl0BJN4Fz9pm7J9XAzjSUjKalEGmBHGGd4iFHQqOzawLZFT3yY7tB7HJKLMGUJyKoZYnuYq5U-cCnBxX4tQcb1BgPho3HbW8Vcc76K0B-st4RmJ0c/s320/Slide3.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I spent time setting up my room. Here is my door - I love turtles and have tried to incorporate it into my room as best as I can! Each turtle has a name of a student on it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNGK_KBxAg72mu9wZ9zdguuDufxaEMrIFCA0g4_-461iyGKbLpmkPeTK22MvaAeGslOlbar_P-F67e76HOI-SsIzMZBojlzvsYRob2VVQNi78mckqcP0kAsbz4S-O-w9JbZZf0g326RKw/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNGK_KBxAg72mu9wZ9zdguuDufxaEMrIFCA0g4_-461iyGKbLpmkPeTK22MvaAeGslOlbar_P-F67e76HOI-SsIzMZBojlzvsYRob2VVQNi78mckqcP0kAsbz4S-O-w9JbZZf0g326RKw/s320/Slide4.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Right inside the door is my attendance graph. It is on the filing cabinet and in a perfect place for my students to sign in as soon as they walk in the room. Each day I ask a different question for them to answer. It helps me with taking attendance because I can just look at the names still on the left to see who is absent. That is - unless a student forgets. I spend a good 2-3 weeks in the beginning of the year reminding students to sign in until they all remember!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioUgyTq7af-GjtBxjiB7rBxJT3KtFnwsdTqsQUHqmZC5PO3L_XF47WZChajod410hsivpaViddjPUsVk6_TCGM8cAy127asDBXclQAw0-o8AlYPpCzzyW2RA2u8GWZWSlges-OLEEp3o4/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioUgyTq7af-GjtBxjiB7rBxJT3KtFnwsdTqsQUHqmZC5PO3L_XF47WZChajod410hsivpaViddjPUsVk6_TCGM8cAy127asDBXclQAw0-o8AlYPpCzzyW2RA2u8GWZWSlges-OLEEp3o4/s320/Slide5.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the view of my room showing that it was ready for open house. My students come in the Friday before school starts to meet me and unpack their supplies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxR-g2de_5EDCcf5gfFIjlKAB5xiWT8rM-JXu9v6PHjHTUGaMiQc-LOyMoTYvylbD_P2e4KnDO982NpVOgN_E-YLG4yUmtzf_K2iw_2f1-xJLeVkjCmnodwqe1SYlGJBJZPdhyOHVS-QM/s1600/Slide6.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxR-g2de_5EDCcf5gfFIjlKAB5xiWT8rM-JXu9v6PHjHTUGaMiQc-LOyMoTYvylbD_P2e4KnDO982NpVOgN_E-YLG4yUmtzf_K2iw_2f1-xJLeVkjCmnodwqe1SYlGJBJZPdhyOHVS-QM/s320/Slide6.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's my student work board. I hung up advice from last year's bunch so the board wasn't empty. It now has work from this year's bunch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_xNqMU5hOzDP0PWADb6fmDdXW4X9uTluMOyonnrFTfeA2kYPIsrWl8dvVdjn8SPVa9Hgy7iMOa8-uPfkcVFFYjRNb_g1JzSlG81Pq2F1gApf5KMxjl6ieN4wJkdYhp-4qT7YLkpdIJ8/s1600/Slide7.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_xNqMU5hOzDP0PWADb6fmDdXW4X9uTluMOyonnrFTfeA2kYPIsrWl8dvVdjn8SPVa9Hgy7iMOa8-uPfkcVFFYjRNb_g1JzSlG81Pq2F1gApf5KMxjl6ieN4wJkdYhp-4qT7YLkpdIJ8/s320/Slide7.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My students fill out a calendar page each month and write about special events that happen throughout the year. At the end of the year, we put the pages together to make a yearbook. I'm trying something new this year. I'm hopeful that my students will be able to file their own yearbook pages when they finish with them so I don't have to take time to do that throughout the year. I'll let you know how it goes!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Loving these bathroom passes! I downloaded the labels <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Hand-Sanitizer-Germx-Bathroom-Pass-Labels-FREEBIE-1959388" target="_blank">here</a>. Since the toner needs to be replaced in our color printer at school, I just printed them in black and white and colored in the labels myself. When the hand sanitizer runs out in each bottle, I will just pour some more in from a larger bottle so I don't have to move the labels over or print more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's a picture of my bins. Those are papers to hand out, completed work, and lost and found.<br />
<br />

This is my turtle calendar that I love! Next to it is my jobs. I change jobs every week.<br />

This is where I keep the daily schedule. If you like the cards, you can get them in my store <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Classroom-Decor-Turtle-Schedule-Cards-1318963" target="_blank">here</a>.<a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><br />

<br />
At the other end of the board is where I keep my headings for the different subjects I teach. Right now, I'm ready to put up a math warmup in the empty spot!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here you can see where I store some reading materials. Those are bins for each reading group - I keep their books in there. I also have a drawer for each group where I keep worksheets and other materials for their group.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love this bulletin board. It says, "It's Smooth Sailing in Mrs. Shockey's Second Grade" and I have a boat up for each student. Eventually, I'll turn this board into something related to reading for reading groups.<br />

*****************************<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm back! At least for this week! I've definitely neglected my blog, store, etc due to my wedding. I still have 4 days to go, but I'm so prepared, I can take some time for blogging.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, remember when I blogged about <a href="http://techieturtleteacher.blogspot.com/2015/05/tech-tip-time-saver-tip-on-screen.html" target="_blank">using on screen sticky notes</a>? In that post, you can see my desktop organizer. Well, I've updated my desktop organizer to make it brighter and more helpful with all the different social media accounts I use now.<br />
<br />
Here is what it looks like now:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb0rx4_g3n0maZxwKC6iKda3sPEw5BU6fU9FWegIAW3BkjNeTWpxfocHBieQd8BKRJ7FcecAgY-Bx_WJgfUl85f5mu9Vo1QbXTMCqpiw1tL1qFJGSgYKHrR5hImt-K9gQVMN-BiWh4APg/s1600/BrightText.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb0rx4_g3n0maZxwKC6iKda3sPEw5BU6fU9FWegIAW3BkjNeTWpxfocHBieQd8BKRJ7FcecAgY-Bx_WJgfUl85f5mu9Vo1QbXTMCqpiw1tL1qFJGSgYKHrR5hImt-K9gQVMN-BiWh4APg/s640/BrightText.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I love how bright it is and the different fonts really make it pop. Definitely motivating for me to keep working on my store and using social media to connect with my followers.<br />
<br />
I had a request on Facebook to make it available in my store. So it is! And you can get it for free by clicking on the graphic below.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Desktop-Organizer-Bright-Social-Media-1940177" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Agjt9CyvpWCJ86a1kWCBn_ppIjaBEQ47w85CJUdMdHT5WqJdFDutXJ-ZiLmoMfRfJ-SZ6INdYQy_6jBKx5t2zjhPqiSiWu2_tTczLKU8yKKg_HBE5UCSaVUfipVdCWIFKVmnNV3Eqik/s200/Slide1.PNG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Included in the download is directions on how to use the desktop organizer. It tells you how to use the text version or the no text version.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What are you waiting for? Don't you want this bright organizer on your desktop? If you don't like my text labels, you can add your own on the no text version!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you're using my desktop, I'd love to see a picture of it!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After your student teacher has spent time in your classroom, it is a good idea to thank him/her for his/her hard work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
You can do this with a gift from your students and a gift from you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Your students can create cards, a book, etc for the student teacher. You can give him/her a personalized gift or you can just give him/her a basket of school supplies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Whatever you choose, make it special for your student teacher.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It is very important for your student teacher to learn how to reflect on his/her lessons. You can help with this process by asking him/her to think about what went well and what didn't go so well. Your student teacher should think about why things went well and why things did not go well. He/she should try to keep track of the things that went well in order to do the same thing in the future. Your student teacher should also think about what he/she can do differently in the future.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Your student teacher doesn't need to formally reflect on every single lesson that is taught, but he/she should try to reflect on at least one lesson a day. You can set up a reflection schedule to make sure that he/she is reflecting on different subjects or just reflect on lessons based on how well they went.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Early on in your student teacher's experience, you should reflect with him/her. Explain what you thought went well and what needed to be changed. Try to explain your reasoning as best as you can.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Your student teacher can slowly start the reflection process on his/her own once you know he/she feels comfortable reflecting on all aspects of the lesson.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once your student teacher starts teaching lessons, it is important for him/her to learn how to grade. Make sure you discuss your grading scale. Do your students receive letter grades, number grades, codes, etc? Whatever you use, make sure your student teacher understands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Show your student teacher how you keep track of grades. Where is your grade book? Is it electronic? Is it on a website or is it just a program on your computer? Is it a paper copy? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once your student teacher begins grading, where do you want him/her to record the grades? Do you even want him/her to input it directly? Do you want the grades to be written out on a spreadsheet for you to input the grades later? Do you just want the graded papers back in a pile for you to record?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When your student teacher plans lessons, you need to give feedback. Your feedback needs to be honest and you need to clearly give your student teacher ideas on how to improve.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I use Microsoft Word and Google Docs when giving feedback to my student teacher. She emails me her plans using Word. I use the comment feature to give specific feedback on parts of her lessons. Since the comment feature lets you highlight different words and sentences, she knows exactly what part of her lesson I am talking about. She doesn't have to guess if I tell her to fix the middle of her lesson where she needed to group students. She knows exactly what part of the lesson she needs to fix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We just recently started using Google Docs for planning. I can add my ideas and she can add her ideas at the same time. No need to email multiple copies of the same lesson plan. In addition, Google Docs has their own version of the comment feature. This means I can still give her thoughts on specific parts of her lessons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've been using Google Docs as informal plans and then she uses those ideas in formal lessons. She runs ideas by me and I give her suggestions right on her informal plans. We've started using this at home to plan because we run out of time during the days she is in school. We don't feel as stressed on Wednesdays and Thursdays because we know we can use Google Docs to have conversations about her plans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is important to give your student teacher positive feedback in addition to things he/she needs to work on. He/she needs to know that she is doing things well and not what he/she needs to improve on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like to phrase some of my feedback in the form of questions. In other words, I ask my student teacher how she could have done things differently. This gets her thinking and reflecting instead of just listening to how I would have taught the lesson.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Verbal feedback is as important as written feedback. Use a combination of verbal and written to make sure your student teacher is making progress. I make sure to discuss things with her that I've written and even things that I haven't written done on her plans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After my student teacher is finished teaching her lesson, I make sure to encourage her to provide her own feedback. I want to know what she think went well and what she wants to work on. Also, before lessons, I ask her if there is something specific she wants me to watch. Does she want me to watch how she phrases her questions? Maybe she wants me to give specific feedback on her timing. I want to make sure she reflects on her lessons and gives herself feedback.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once your student teacher starts planning lessons, he/she will start teaching those lessons. If your student teacher is going to improve, you need to observe their teaching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is very easy to get sucked into feeling like he/she isn't doing it right because it is different than how you would teach the lesson. Try to let it go! I know that is easier said than done, but it will make the placement easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let your student teacher make mistakes. He/she will learn more from making mistakes than if you jump in to correct the lessons immediately. Make notes of the mistakes or when you would do something differently, but try to bite your tongue. It is important for the students to see the student teacher as a teacher. This won't happen if you constantly jump in.</div>

When observing your student teacher, you should also make sure you make note of things that he/she does well. Don't always make it about things to work on. Think about writing report card comments. You don't always tell the parents about negatives. So you shouldn't always tell your student teacher about negatives.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today, I'm going to share some tips with you about planning. Keep reading to see what I have to say!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPn7P_Qazqpy4ZpQz8YWGTtFL5b6_Xr5HMTMaSvf8vvEMkD7rqnJhdiht8GSX1KKrNXEQDdKxr6C_Kj8WUORRVtUaRHFdacYEQWk5vqp5D0GyP0BWTALS0cp8cofr_GTMkHztGBDBZMp4/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPn7P_Qazqpy4ZpQz8YWGTtFL5b6_Xr5HMTMaSvf8vvEMkD7rqnJhdiht8GSX1KKrNXEQDdKxr6C_Kj8WUORRVtUaRHFdacYEQWk5vqp5D0GyP0BWTALS0cp8cofr_GTMkHztGBDBZMp4/s1600/Slide5.PNG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I feel like I tell you how important each stage is every time I write a post. But, if you don't take the time to plan with your student teacher in the beginning of the placement, you will spend more time trying to catch up later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So... shortly after your student teacher starts with you, you need to start planning together. This means spending time planning while sitting with your student teacher.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the beginning, you will do all the planning. You will explain your thought process. Now is a good time to give your student teacher copies of the curriculum if that hasn't been done already. Your student teacher needs to see the how of planning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a few weeks, you can start to turn some of the planning over to your student teacher. Pick one subject and let your student teacher lead the planning meetings between both of you. Of course, you will be there to provide support and talk about the ideas, but you should ask your student teacher what he/she wants to do to teach that unit or standard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You are working toward letting your student teacher plan on his/her own. When that happens make sure he/she submits plans to you at least 48 hours before he/she will be teaching the lesson. This gives you time to read over the plans to give feedback. It also allows for the student teacher to fix or change anything in the lesson plan.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Communication is very important when working with your student teacher.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcu1kVYh0F8D_3RNNSa5p8G8YX2l3EryIX83V4wFx_lHipyab2TNZ6AdD6NnALrtbsRrvf_rUYR-Bu0qQIT2mBq8VjCGN4daUiOWgHSJk4MUrjC84xexZ2jeYtzzEudhs1O7P3C2j6LnY/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcu1kVYh0F8D_3RNNSa5p8G8YX2l3EryIX83V4wFx_lHipyab2TNZ6AdD6NnALrtbsRrvf_rUYR-Bu0qQIT2mBq8VjCGN4daUiOWgHSJk4MUrjC84xexZ2jeYtzzEudhs1O7P3C2j6LnY/s1600/Slide4.PNG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div>
As soon as your student teacher takes on responsibilities, it is important to communicate with him/her. You need to make sure your expectations are clear.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are a few simple guidelines to remember:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. If a problem comes up, discuss it IMMEDIATELY! Don't wait. It won't resolve itself on its own. Even if you think it will just go away. It won't. So talk about something when it is a little problem so you don't have to deal with it as a big problem.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Make sure to give verbal and written feedback after lessons.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Ask your student teacher how he/she thinks things went. Get their opinion before giving yours. This encourages reflection.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />

<br />
Once your student teacher is introduced to the families, you need to set up a schedule for releasing responsibilities to your student teacher.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCHWAdD5I0O3zyq3l14l4oWM3SRo6NCvT8GgilOZT9BmoviXiYaFFwwwZnTx2TddOR5n5c2-ebU1rTEXclQ_6IJFoYC4qylQ9y6njiE8J-BAI-gWoUD7T6ANOYLykwy3UbvkboGIT6UVk/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCHWAdD5I0O3zyq3l14l4oWM3SRo6NCvT8GgilOZT9BmoviXiYaFFwwwZnTx2TddOR5n5c2-ebU1rTEXclQ_6IJFoYC4qylQ9y6njiE8J-BAI-gWoUD7T6ANOYLykwy3UbvkboGIT6UVk/s1600/Slide3.PNG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If your student's school gives you a suggested schedule, you should follow that. If not, you can use these guidelines to help you.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You need to think about how long your student teacher should spend observing. Make sure they have a few days to observe and take notes on routines. This also gives them time to learn the names of your students.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once your student teacher has a chance to observe your teaching, then you can think about giving him/her more responsibilities.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start slowly. Give your student teacher easy routines first - walking students to other places in the building, read alouds, transition times, etc.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then start planning and co-teaching with your student teacher. Start slow. Spend a lot of time explaining your thinking when you are planning and reflect together after lessons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Build on previous experiences. Make sure you are both comfortable with what is decided. Also rely on a schedule to help you through the student teaching experience.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slowly let your student teacher start teaching lessons. Each week, he/she can take over more lessons.</div>
To go along with these blog posts, I have created a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mentoring-a-Student-Teacher-Guide-1672105" target="_blank">guide</a>. <br />
The very next thing you need to do after preparing for your student teacher is to introduce him/her to your students and families. Read on to find out some things you should do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwLXSCBbI01ACU65a7RMue6ZGBSLKmZbuysopYY9-JkyTjDy33PMGVWXOT2_h8bt0Kat3c-0NLQ_D4B_tgW14XfFLIZFYKBKEYcu-rsWS3TPJ4JpRPVfTQ1PvM1KdKSByx-2ckDK44ahI/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwLXSCBbI01ACU65a7RMue6ZGBSLKmZbuysopYY9-JkyTjDy33PMGVWXOT2_h8bt0Kat3c-0NLQ_D4B_tgW14XfFLIZFYKBKEYcu-rsWS3TPJ4JpRPVfTQ1PvM1KdKSByx-2ckDK44ahI/s1600/Slide2.PNG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
1. On your student teacher's first day, introduce him/her to your students and make sure it is clear why they are there. It is important for your students to see the student teacher as a teacher as well.<br />
<br />
2. Give your student some time during their first day there to chat with your students for a few minutes. Some things they can share are: name of the school they are attending, hobbies or other interests, family, etc.<br />
<br />
3. Your student teacher also needs to be introduced to the parents of your students. The easiest way to accomplish this is for your student teacher to write a letter to be sent home to parents. The letter can include many of the same things that your student teacher shared with your students. In addition to those things, your student teacher should include a positive statement about looking forward to working in the classroom during this time.<br />
<br />
4. One other introduction that I find useful is to introduce your students to your student teacher. What I mean by this is give your students a chance to share some things about them with your student teacher so he/she can get to know the students. You can have your students write a letter to the student teacher either before he/she starts or shortly after he/she starts the internship.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've agreed to take a student teacher for this semester. My student teacher will be in my classroom 2 days a week. Since this is the first time for her being in a classroom, I have a very important job to do. I've had student teachers 2 other times and I want to share some things I've learned about being a mentor.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to run this series until the end of the school year. It most likely will run every other Thursday until I run out of tips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
With that being said, here's my first tip in this series.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAraSsvQNBr9vFOCJwVn4JC7CUWECI3MuY6ZOU4rRM2OJYvaEyZx1Ut5hGfvA4D_RT9CvWddfCm-eOkMvbLTlfRJDesM1-l35x_Ygl1Juakpo4aobwyU08qghkx31HitDi6kMKkwp4chM/s1600/01preparingnew.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAraSsvQNBr9vFOCJwVn4JC7CUWECI3MuY6ZOU4rRM2OJYvaEyZx1Ut5hGfvA4D_RT9CvWddfCm-eOkMvbLTlfRJDesM1-l35x_Ygl1Juakpo4aobwyU08qghkx31HitDi6kMKkwp4chM/s1600/01preparingnew.png" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The preparing stage is very important. As soon as you agree to take a student teacher, you need to start preparing for it immediately. Start making sure your room is ready for someone else to occupy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Your student teacher should be given a desk. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He/she will also need copies of your schedule and class lists. Highlight names of behavior problems and academic needs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Make a list of important things you want to share with your student teacher as soon as she/he steps foot in your classroom:</div>
<ul>
<li>names of other teachers on your team</li>
<li>how to work the copy machine</li>
<li>where the bathrooms are</li>
<li>your expectations on arrival time</li>
</ul>
<div>
<a href="http://instagram.com/talesofateach/" target="_blank">Kelli Olson</a> says: "I was a student teacher not too long ago and we've had lots at our building this year. Some teachers were not happy with the effort of their student teachers, but they also didn't communicate the best and I think that's key. Mentors need to be clear with expectations and ask their student teachers out right, as they are not always comfortable sharing. But if you create an environment where questions and concerns are welcomed, all will succeed."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I completely agree with everything she shared. I also plan on elaborating on some of the things she shared later on in this series.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
*****************************</div>
Do you want to know how people post shortened urls to their blog posts or other pages? These short url codes are very popular when trying to save characters on Twitter.<br />
<br />
There are a couple different ones that I have used.<br />
<br />
The first one is from Google. You just go to <a href="https://goo.gl/" target="_blank">https://goo.gl/</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebYRTyKvLi1Fgd2qgVMYntliTF3U-kfF-273-HdQdWOChuei3p3kNPCh4qUN45V8Ay4wurkfcFexWaCBcMFy9usSwBNcUnjqXpbeEqQDwT-P5FvTWEUI__T6lnrIrtcLf3pUJjqlBcFE/s1600/googleurlshortener.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebYRTyKvLi1Fgd2qgVMYntliTF3U-kfF-273-HdQdWOChuei3p3kNPCh4qUN45V8Ay4wurkfcFexWaCBcMFy9usSwBNcUnjqXpbeEqQDwT-P5FvTWEUI__T6lnrIrtcLf3pUJjqlBcFE/s1600/googleurlshortener.JPG" height="166" width="400" /></a></div>
Paste or type the url that you want to shorten in the box.<br />
<br />
Let's say I want to link to my blog. I would put the address of my blog in the box and then click on the shorten URL button.<br />
<br />
It will give you the short code for you to copy and show you a snippet of the page. That way you can easily check to make sure you entered the original link correctly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ooGFO9HRuKwzrXz2vP3e9qKdZZ-qvzZWSfhABTlmr2Qv5dlMjLLt5A1AnYNwV5PiGNpOZ7RsG66wGmEF2CMqhh7n2w3qdES3m6lLeei1uz8ZxFDMkV4VcYg-EE5jgIUGNAJPgaj8Iqk/s1600/googleurl2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ooGFO9HRuKwzrXz2vP3e9qKdZZ-qvzZWSfhABTlmr2Qv5dlMjLLt5A1AnYNwV5PiGNpOZ7RsG66wGmEF2CMqhh7n2w3qdES3m6lLeei1uz8ZxFDMkV4VcYg-EE5jgIUGNAJPgaj8Iqk/s1600/googleurl2.JPG" height="400" width="330" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, you can post the short code in a tweet and it won't take up as many characters as the original link would. It gives you space to write a little blurb.<br />
<br />
Another use for short codes is sharing website links with parents. I could give them a handout with a link to a website. It would be easier for them to enter the short code instead of the entire link. Less characters means less chance for errors.<br />
<br />
You don't have to sign up for an account to see the stats from your code. As long as you are already signed in to your Google account, you'll be able to see how many clicks your short code has had.<br />
<br />
I've also used <a href="https://bitly.com/" target="_blank">https://bitly.com/</a> to shorten urls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRpWcwAaHC80NMfE82kL8XiYk-4Vm_4CPGae1dcV6JgeqQBvgNId9K-oy8zMY9QQ8oJoxHUMLbcZ-bz3dgaqKwiU-S4Df3jr5Pg-VyVU-knW15gk6bPrQuf-zN2vJ1i4THVJfMGAJLx7E/s1600/bitly.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRpWcwAaHC80NMfE82kL8XiYk-4Vm_4CPGae1dcV6JgeqQBvgNId9K-oy8zMY9QQ8oJoxHUMLbcZ-bz3dgaqKwiU-S4Df3jr5Pg-VyVU-knW15gk6bPrQuf-zN2vJ1i4THVJfMGAJLx7E/s1600/bitly.JPG" height="103" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Type or paste your link into the box in the upper right-hand corner. Then click shorten. It'll take you to another page to show you the code.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgngayD2BBoMw_qVF6-tmq7_TBJiS5KAl7A3-hOlQBzjc4cn7u_XIsjt1PNBSCBuEdStfx0ZCWO7lQQDMx8V8se7sXOpf9umlYZzmQB0x_kq_VAYQkp6fg4Wm9EaeiUCy1mtonBQ9ODhmk/s1600/bitly2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgngayD2BBoMw_qVF6-tmq7_TBJiS5KAl7A3-hOlQBzjc4cn7u_XIsjt1PNBSCBuEdStfx0ZCWO7lQQDMx8V8se7sXOpf9umlYZzmQB0x_kq_VAYQkp6fg4Wm9EaeiUCy1mtonBQ9ODhmk/s1600/bitly2.JPG" height="180" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then you just use that code in your tweets or wherever else you'd like. It also shows you other links that have been shortened recently.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you want to keep track of data, you can sign up for a free account. This also allows you to create bundles of links to share at the same time. Perfect if you want to share many websites with parents at the same time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I haven't used the free account option yet, but it is definitely something I want to look into. I'll post more at a later date if I discover something really neat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
When you're creating products, do you get tired of using your mouse or trackpad to save, copy, paste, or bold text?<br />
<br />
You're in luck! You need to use keyboard shortcuts. I've compiled a list of my most frequent keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts definitely help me and I hope you'll learn a new one or two today!<br />
<br />
Keyboard shortcuts are really simple. For almost all of the ones on my list, you just hold down control (on a PC) or ⌘ (on a Mac) and then type the letter that goes with the shortcut you want.<br />
<br />
For example, if I want to undo something that I've done, on a PC, I would hold down the ctrl key and then type z. Poof, whatever I did is now gone! This is so helpful if I'm testing something out and I want to be able to go back with ruining my whole product. On a Mac, you'd hold down ⌘ and then type z.<br />
<br />
The one I like that doesn't use ctrl or ⌘ is the copyright symbol. Just type (c). It will autocorrect to the copyright symbol just like this - ©. Try it out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyQcK9Pkm-xwn1p7ppU4DuPhHqOa9DMfJjCkKOiPICxxEmlvbbKN12-osNZhD5K3jRdT-MJXpOMOLSazLHmQ0-0ly1UQEVD62uKuU9uRMofd4xby_WupXkhJ86k8v8NVRI1_lOCAAW9BM/s1600/PinterestWallPops.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyQcK9Pkm-xwn1p7ppU4DuPhHqOa9DMfJjCkKOiPICxxEmlvbbKN12-osNZhD5K3jRdT-MJXpOMOLSazLHmQ0-0ly1UQEVD62uKuU9uRMofd4xby_WupXkhJ86k8v8NVRI1_lOCAAW9BM/s1600/PinterestWallPops.png" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I saw this <a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2014/10/bright-ideas-for-october.html" target="_blank">post</a> from Teaching with Style and I just had to have those Wall Pops. I had been wanting another option for dry erase boards for my classroom. It usually takes me a long time to pass out the boards and materials. I was looking for something to save me time. When I saw these, I knew they'd do the trick!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJ5SgEq6R2LFV6K-ImhCd7VS_rsUfBfBckvbYuANMK7bnbx-MTnsveFJh0SdDAU9g5CLUWMFXNgte_p0-8_N2vSF4OQJrF97Zvk3po2pjPlHg4GsXQ0vGAgtettPQ93Ek6PM_rGTLtDw/s1600/wallpops+(2).PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJ5SgEq6R2LFV6K-ImhCd7VS_rsUfBfBckvbYuANMK7bnbx-MTnsveFJh0SdDAU9g5CLUWMFXNgte_p0-8_N2vSF4OQJrF97Zvk3po2pjPlHg4GsXQ0vGAgtettPQ93Ek6PM_rGTLtDw/s1600/wallpops+(2).PNG" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
Well, what are they?<br />
<br />
Giant circles that you can write on using dry erase markers. They erase perfectly and are so motivating for students!<br />
<br />
You can get them on Amazon. As soon as I finished reading her post, I went right over there and ordered 3 packages. Each package comes with 3 wall pops. There are many different colors. I got all green - it matches my room theme and I wouldn't have any fighting over the colors.<br />
<br />
The circles are fairly large, so you could cut each one in half and double the number of writing spaces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_nLJv-zS4tM0xVCoLiUygM0fEcouaDS8AEZhcM-4PRoL81Y_8ccRx6fjCs0ZKUqLPyWKTBW1D9u4pvIbRNfvHMX5x5SB4NDI0tBg_sGn5Kwcjyyn1KouEXTnRlgQuvA2pLNiZaWhCPk/s1600/wallpops.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_nLJv-zS4tM0xVCoLiUygM0fEcouaDS8AEZhcM-4PRoL81Y_8ccRx6fjCs0ZKUqLPyWKTBW1D9u4pvIbRNfvHMX5x5SB4NDI0tBg_sGn5Kwcjyyn1KouEXTnRlgQuvA2pLNiZaWhCPk/s1600/wallpops.PNG" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
Every time my students use these, the wheels in my head are spinning on how else I could use them. I have 9 set up around my reading group table. It works perfectly because my largest reading group has 9 students, so every child has a dot.<br />
<br />
Here are a few ways that I've used them in my classroom:<br />
-practice writing words during reading group<br />
-practice math problems<br />
-answer a question after reading a book instead of using a post-it<br />
-practice dictation sentences<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week I showed you some <a href="http://techieturtleteacher.blogspot.com/2014/09/tips-for-teachers-teaching-tip-place.html" target="_blank">place value manipulatives</a> that you just have to have for your classroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Remember these?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have your students get in groups of 3. Assign a place value to each person - hundreds, tens, and ones. That person is in charge of rolling that place value dice. Groups can practice making numbers using standard form, word form, and expanded form. If you want them to write down their numbers, they can use this <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/2NBT3-Place-Value-Expanded-Form-Word-Form-194875" target="_blank">chart</a>. It's free!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you have dry erase boards for your students to use? Like this?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht0H2ohurHSmzhPHMjVQNhYzrJYXoTxrkY9vS7gyUyAEzfdehC_VL9pyud2Oq_mDiHEjujihh63ryj9RLzzxZIWHAUQJU8tDm9haeYyURZWq9TpgFwx08dbUIyHCUUSku06bmcxzN8660/s1600/whiteboard.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht0H2ohurHSmzhPHMjVQNhYzrJYXoTxrkY9vS7gyUyAEzfdehC_VL9pyud2Oq_mDiHEjujihh63ryj9RLzzxZIWHAUQJU8tDm9haeYyURZWq9TpgFwx08dbUIyHCUUSku06bmcxzN8660/s1600/whiteboard.png" height="200" width="153" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Give each student a partner. Have partners sit back to back. Partner A gets to use the dry erase board, so make sure they also have a dry erase marker and an eraser. Partner B gets to hold on to the place value dice. Partner B will roll the dice and use clues to tell Partner A what number was rolled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If Partner B rolled the dice that are pictured above, he or she would say something like, "My number has 4 hundreds, 2 tens, and 6 ones." Partner A would write it on the white board. When Partner A is finished, both partners will turn to face each other. If they get it right, they can high five. Then the partners will switch, so now Partner A gets to roll the dice and Partner B gets to write.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like to have my students challenge each other. So they don't always say the numbers in order of place value. They might say the tens first or the ones first. It really gets them thinking.</div>

Students have a hard time visualizing, so you have to help them by showing them.</span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I keep these base 10 blocks in my room all year. I pull them out for many lessons. So far, I've used them in all the standards we've taught so far - NBT1, NBT2, NBT3, and NBT4.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEEQeU6E1pnzPCK6jK7HQgcQHGkNZeafJjHLmkiTtIFIxiU1ialb6Gaurk9_mmxFMBZ95pRqtOl1QHqi6RZJwimaJmuG3qhgMx8qhZkMuG3AcBCeISbiq62tZ8DbFS4YuNi7CrqCxpcMg/s1600/baseten3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEEQeU6E1pnzPCK6jK7HQgcQHGkNZeafJjHLmkiTtIFIxiU1ialb6Gaurk9_mmxFMBZ95pRqtOl1QHqi6RZJwimaJmuG3qhgMx8qhZkMuG3AcBCeISbiq62tZ8DbFS4YuNi7CrqCxpcMg/s1600/baseten3.PNG" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I keep them in baggies, so I can easily pass out blocks to the students when needed. Each baggie has hundreds, tens, and ones. The students can just use whatever ones they need and keep the rest in the bag.<br />
<br />
Another thing I love is these foam place value dice. They are quiet when rolled across a desk. Every teacher loves that, right? I use these when practicing expanded form. The students can easily see the different place values. Our school has 2 sets of these. I would love to have more so partner groups could use them at the same time, but I'll take what I can get. These are definitely better for whole group instruction than the place value dice I'm showing you below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZImjJZMtd9ldJxwD9hszc2ltrVsixeAuuU0UBzMDQN8bbAFblzFFWFzCQcXzzsrvROv8aiAmPxsNvhlj6pkg4osYOPu_yRfYbQrJEzonNAQvDXWqSVCfjM0mZLeot7eorv2ymsfkEd4/s1600/foamplacevaluedice2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZImjJZMtd9ldJxwD9hszc2ltrVsixeAuuU0UBzMDQN8bbAFblzFFWFzCQcXzzsrvROv8aiAmPxsNvhlj6pkg4osYOPu_yRfYbQrJEzonNAQvDXWqSVCfjM0mZLeot7eorv2ymsfkEd4/s1600/foamplacevaluedice2.PNG" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have these smaller place value dice. Unfortunately, they make A LOT of noise on desks. One way I've tried to eliminate the noise level is by asking students to sit on the floor and roll the dice on the carpet. Definitely quieter that way. I have a few sets of these dice, so more students are able to use these at the same time. I've run stations using these and the foam dice. Both sets of place value dice are better than regular dice because the students can see the difference between the hundreds, tens, and ones. With regular dice, students have to already have an understanding of place value in order to recognize why they work.<br />

If you aren't using any of these manipulatives in your room when teaching place value, you need to get yourself some now!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you have a problem encouraging ALL your students to participate in class? Do you want to make sure you are calling on everyone and not letting a few students do all the talking?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You're in luck! I have the perfect tip for you today!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Buy some popsicle sticks. Write each child's name on a stick. Keep all sticks in a cup or basket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you're ready for a discussion, start pulling sticks and calling on those students. Don't put their name back in until every child has had a chance to participate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It definitely encourages students to pay attention because they never know when they're going to be called on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It also helps me make sure students are participating and understanding the lesson.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Do you read Chrysanthemum with your students? I read it with my students this year and they loved it! If you haven't read it, you need to. It has a very important message to share.<br />
<br />
Basically, Chrysanthemum is being bullied because of her long name and it teaches students to think about how to make people feel like they are blooming, not wilting.<br />
<br />
I had a long conversation with my students about what it means to feel like you are blooming and what it means to feel like you are wilting.<br />
<br />
I have these posters displayed in my classroom as a reminder and I have individual reminders on each desk.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I assign numbers to my students. This is very helpful when checking to see who has turned in work and who has not. It's also helpful when returning papers to students.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In order for my students to learn their numbers, I write them on their name tags. This way, they see it all the time and have it to reference when completing their work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One way the numbers help me is for their mailboxes. Last year, I labeled them with stickers with their numbers, but they started peeling off throughout the year and were difficult to read with papers in the mailboxes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I saw this strategy on Pinterest and decided I needed to try it! I tried peeling off the labels that I used last year, but they were stuck, so I just left them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got enough binder clips for my mailboxes. I wrote student numbers on stickers and put those stickers on the binder clips. Then I put each binder clip on the mailbox slot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My hope is that they will be easier to read throughout the year and won't peel off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At my school, we only hand out school mail to students who are the youngest or only at the school. I don't have it pictured here, but I have red dots next to the numbers of students who do not receive the school papers because they have a younger brother or sister at the school. I also put a star next to their numbers on their name tags, so it's really easy to see who gets specific mail from the school.</div>

<br />
I'm super excited to be linking up with other bloggers again this month to share things that you oughta know! After you read my post, make sure you hop to the other blogs to see their tips.<br />
<br />
You Oughta Know about setting clear expectations.<br />
<br />
Students need to learn routines and your expectations. I've found that the best way to do this is to talk about what things look like and what it doesn't look like in the classroom.<br />
<br />
For example - DEAR time. Drop Everything And Read. You might call it something else, but basically it's independent reading time.<br />
<br />
The first time my students had to DEAR, I was frustrated with the talking, the not reading, the frequent trips to the classroom library, etc.<br />
<br />
So I decided to do something about it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHcUvlHK_FAm8dMiizT4ruiervnpoyZd44yI1v2z9XocT897mB3hencpxvyYWVY4f_6lkcV7cFqf3hXbzDBalxE4i_aqzkfSaGzJzOECvcMDgQW3xqpTwazfuLjC8uzVFn_Yzk0CVDFRk/s1600/whatdearlookslike.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHcUvlHK_FAm8dMiizT4ruiervnpoyZd44yI1v2z9XocT897mB3hencpxvyYWVY4f_6lkcV7cFqf3hXbzDBalxE4i_aqzkfSaGzJzOECvcMDgQW3xqpTwazfuLjC8uzVFn_Yzk0CVDFRk/s1600/whatdearlookslike.PNG" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
We closed our eyes and imagined what DEAR time should look like. Once we opened our eyes, I asked my students to share their ideas with a partner. Then we shared as a class and I recorded their thoughts.<br />
<br />
I started off asking them to tell me what it should look like and they started telling me things they shouldn't do. So I left it open ended and they had to tell me which side to write it on.<br />
<br />
I was very impressed with the things they came up with. Especially the last one under what DEAR does not look like - having a book on your desk and not looking at it. Genius! Now, they can't try to get away with that.<br />
<br />
<b><i>What other routines do you need to set up clear expectations for?</i></b><br />
<br />

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Who is ready for a management tip?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How many times do students ask you questions about things that you just said? Or how many times do students try to interrupt you during reading groups?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I use "Ask 3 Before Me" with my students. They are told to ask 3 other people before they can ask me. If 3 people can't answer their question, it usually means I didn't do a good job in explaining directions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many times when students have a question, it is because they weren't listening in the first place. They will have to do more work to get the answer to their question and hopefully learn to start listening to directions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I created this poster to display in my room so students are reminded of the 3 Before Me rule. I printed out the black and white copy and then just colored in the boxes before I laminated it.</div>

I found this idea on Pinterest 2 summers ago. I don't have credit for it, but I have pictures and directions!<br />
<br />

<br />
Shopping list -<br />
-mason jars (as many as you want for this project)<br />
-glitter<br />
-glitter glue to match the color of your glitter<br />
<br />
Directions:<br />
1. Fill your mason jar almost completely full with HOT water. The hot water melts the glue in order for the jar to work well.<br />
2. Pour some glitter into the bottom of the jar. How much depends on the size of your jar. I think I probably filled my jar about 1/8 of the way.<br />
3. Squeeze the glitter glue into the jar.<br />
4. After you have as much glue as you want, stir the glue and the glitter to make sure it is spread out throughout the jar.<br />
5. Put the lid on. I suggest using a hot glue gun to seal the lid, especially if your students are going to be using these jars.<br />
6. Turn the jar upside down or shake it slightly to watch the glitter fall.<br />
<br />
Here are my finished jars:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidFi-vF_I4lODUHJYcbrK3Cg-FgSrPNaaLpxAS08K3UZpAgz8Lulg_yiNkSLcHo3QJGBApH1esPHDB9F-B_DhuEG-Kb6VPMUoCwqcH4ntelAXP9CFrLpkCgEXIOxEyBAc2McMYDDJd31k/s1600/jars2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidFi-vF_I4lODUHJYcbrK3Cg-FgSrPNaaLpxAS08K3UZpAgz8Lulg_yiNkSLcHo3QJGBApH1esPHDB9F-B_DhuEG-Kb6VPMUoCwqcH4ntelAXP9CFrLpkCgEXIOxEyBAc2McMYDDJd31k/s1600/jars2.PNG" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can use these jars as part of a calm down station. My students loved looking at these throughout the day. You do need to set boundaries as to how they are supposed to be handled.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My students knew they could only turn it over once and then they had to set it on the table to watch. If they were seen shaking it or playing with it, they would lose it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a management tip because you can definitely use it to manage behavior. It could be a reward or like I mentioned earlier, as a way to take a break and calm down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It definitely does it's job! I feel much better after sitting down to watch these. The teachers at my school joked that I made them for the teachers to use and not the students.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i>How would you use these in your classroom?</i></b></div>

Kelsea over at <a href="http://www.teachergems.com/enter-blog" target="_blank">Teacher Gems</a> has started this wonderful weekly linky for tips for teachers. I have so much to share, so here goes! I think I'm going to share one or two tips a week. Since I already have my tech tips on Tuesdays, I'm going to focus on the other categories.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Usually I'll make my posts on Thursdays, but I wasn't ready for it this week. I wonder why...</div>

I had a difficult time trying to figure out which category my tip would fall under. I finally settled on organization. I'll tell you why after I show you my tip.</div>

I have the perfect solution for hanging up words on your word wall!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My first few years, I climbed up on the ladder and hung each word one by one. Lots of tape. Lots of time. And lots of frustration!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's when another teacher in my building shared how she hung her words. Staple, glue, whatever you want to a sentence strip. Then you just have to hang the sentence strip with all your words. I found I could fit 8-9 words on a sentence strip depending on spacing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It probably took a quarter of the time to hang up my words this way. So easy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Soooo... I chose organization because I can organize my words on the sentence strip before hanging them up. I chose not to alphabetize the words under each letter, but you could.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I guess this is more of a time-saving tip, but it still fits!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i>So, what is your favorite organizational or time-saving tip you use in your classroom?</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
