Movie Clip Monday - Tattle Questions

Another great video clip to show at the beginning of the year. It's about tattling and when to tell the teacher.

Maryland Welcomes You Back to School

A lot of Maryland went back to school this week or will be going back next week.  Some Maryland teachers wanted to welcome you back to school with this little linky party.  We will be sharing some tips, pictures, and products to help you transition to a new school year!

I'm going to share a few things that I did on my first day back.  Be sure to check back next week for my big classroom reveal!

My county was one of the earlier ones to go back.  Teachers went back on the 17th and students went back on the 24th.  So today is my 4th day of school!

We've been working on routines and expectations.  I have a good class that really knows how to follow directions.  I'm excited because we'll get to accomplish great things this year!  I also have a student teacher for the first time in the beginning of the year.  It is wonderful having help and I think my students are really going to benefit from her being there.

One thing I did differently this year was take a picture of every student on the first day holding a sign that I made.  By the end of the day, I emailed the picture to each parent so they could see their little darling enjoying second grade!  My parents were very thankful that I took the time to do this.  It also gave me the opportunity to learn a bit more about the students when the parents shared some information with me in their thank you email.

We also started the Daily 5 this week.  Our team read the book this summer and we're all trying it together.  I love it so far!  It really helps with setting expectations.  We jumped right in on day 2 of the school year.  We usually have filler getting to know you activities, but we decided we didn't need a full week of those activities and we should start this right away.  I'm sure I'll be posting more about Daily 5 as we go on, but for now, I can definitely see why teachers love it!

This is an old picture, but we are also getting ready for Back to School Night.  It is much earlier this year than in other years.  Usually we have at least 3 weeks of school before BTSN.  This year, we have during the 2nd week of school.  So we are already busy preparing for this night.  My students are going to be completing my Second Grade Rocks activity to leave on their desks for their parents to see next week.

Even if you don't teach 2nd grade, you're in luck!  I've made this product for Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Just click on the cover below to find the appropriate grade for you.

I hope you've found something useful to use in your classroom this year.

What are your favorite Back to School activities or resources?

Tech Tip Tuesday - Replace Fonts Using PowerPoint

This week's tip is for people who create using PowerPoint.  Have you ever wanted to change a font used in a large document without needing to change every page individually?  Here's where this handy tip comes in!

I love using this tip when updating old products!  The only downside is, the formatting doesn't always look right when changing fonts.  I do have to go back in to move objects around, but it is still easier to replace the fonts all at once.

Tech Tip Tuesday - Storylineonline.net

Have you heard of Storylineonline.net?  This website has a collection of children's books being read by different authors.

Here's a quick overview of how to use the site.

You could set up the site as a listening center for your students.  Maybe your students are tired of always hearing your voice read stories so you could "read" one of these books.

What other ways could you use this site in your classroom?

Tech Tip Tuesday - Schedule Instagram Posts with Hootsuite

This tip is brand new! It just came out last Wednesday and I discovered it immediately! Of course, I had to work on a tutorial for you right away. I had a different tech tip planned, but that will have to wait until next week!

First things first, do you use Hootsuite?

If you do, good! Keep reading and you are ready to go!

If you don't, what are you waiting for? It is such a great tool for scheduling posts to your social media accounts and now it lets you schedule to INSTAGRAM!!

If that doesn't persuade you to try it, I don't know what will.

Read my original post on Hootsuite before trying these directions.

I wrote these with the assumption that you already know how to use Hootsuite.

NOTE: This method does not automatically publish photos to your Instagram account. It sends a notification to your device at your scheduled time and you still have to post it. But it'll send the picture and caption so all you have to do is hit publish.

Are you ready for all the details on how to use it?

The most important thing is to make sure you have updated your Hootsuite app (or installed the app in the first place). It won't work if you haven't updated your app! (I know from experience - I was so excited to figure it out that I rushed through that first step and it didn't work. Had to slow down and actually read the directions.)

I know this was a lot, so please feel free to comment here or email me at techieturtleteacher@gmail.com if you have any trouble at all. I will help you!

This serves the same purpose as Latergram, but I like the Hootsuite way more because:
-I already use Hootsuite so it's easier to just go back to the same account to schedule my Instagram posts.
-Latergram has a limit of 30 uploads a month with the free account. As far as I know, there is NO limit with Hootsuite! :)

What are you waiting for?
Go try to schedule Instagram posts with Hootsuite.
Tell them Cheryl sent you.
Just kidding!
You don't have to ACTUALLY tell them that I sent you.
But go try it!
And then tell all your friends by sharing this post with the directions!

So, are you going to use Hootsuite to schedule some Instagram posts? Am I being a nerd about this tip or do you feel as excited about it as I do??
