Freebie Friday - iPad or Flip Camera Paper Slide

Yay for Friday!  Today, you will be treated to one of my freebies.  Hopefully you are ready to try something new and engaging.  My students love creating paper slides to show their understanding of topics.

Watch my video to show you exactly what a paper slide is.  We used flip cameras, but you can definitely use anything that has video capabilities - cell phones, iPads, etc.

How do you use technology to assess student learning?  What else could you use paper slides to assess?

Sunday Scoop - 11/23

Happy Sunday!  It's almost Thanksgiving... 2 long days before 5 days off.  I think I can... I think I can...

We have parent-teacher conferences tomorrow and Tuesday.  The kids leave after 3.5 hours and we spend 7 more hours meeting with parents.  Long days, but it's worth it to have Wednesday off!

My fiance and I just signed up for Netflix yesterday.  Hopefully I'll find some time today to watch at least one show.

Maryland soccer is playing in their first NCAA tournament game this season tonight.  I had heard it was supposed to rain, but now the forecast looks clear.  Not sure if I'll finish all my work in order to go.  If I can't go, I can watch it on tv.

And now I'm off to the grocery store so I can beat some of the crowds.  Have an awesome Sunday!

Freebie Friday - 3 Thanksgiving Freebies

Yay for Friday!  I have 3 freebies for you today.  Lots to choose from to help you plan for Thanksgiving next week.

The first freebie is Turkey Count and Match from the Kindergarten Connection.

Directions: Print, laminate, and cut out the number and turkey cards. Use in a small group or math center with your students to practice matching numbers to quantity and one to one correspondence!

The 2nd freebie is a KWL chart about Turkeys from Kinderdoll.

The 3rd freebie is Estimate Thanksgiving from My Book Boost.

Your students can practice estimating and counting with this Thanksgiving cornucopia sheet.

Gather items like cubes, buttons, or coins, etc. Then, students will estimate how many of that item will fit inside the entire shape of the cornucopia. They'll write down their estimate and count how many. Fun for the whole class or as a center.

Teacher directions are included.

Which freebies do you think you're going to use with your students?

Tech Tip Tuesday - Keyboard Shortcuts

If you want to join the linky, grab the Tech Tip Tuesday button.  Post about a technology tip.  Then link up below!

Click {here} to fill out my form if you are interested in helping me improve my tech tips.

*****************************
When you're creating products, do you get tired of using your mouse or trackpad to save, copy, paste, or bold text?

You're in luck!  You need to use keyboard shortcuts.  I've compiled a list of my most frequent keyboard shortcuts.  These shortcuts definitely help me and I hope you'll learn a new one or two today!

Keyboard shortcuts are really simple.  For almost all of the ones on my list, you just hold down control (on a PC) or ⌘ (on a Mac) and then type the letter that goes with the shortcut you want.

For example, if I want to undo something that I've done, on a PC, I would hold down the ctrl key and then type z.  Poof, whatever I did is now gone!  This is so helpful if I'm testing something out and I want to be able to go back with ruining my whole product.  On a Mac, you'd hold down ⌘ and then type z.

The one I like that doesn't use ctrl or ⌘ is the copyright symbol.  Just type (c).  It will autocorrect to the copyright symbol just like this - ©.  Try it out!

What keyboard shortcut would you add to this list?

It's Friday again!  I'm back with more freebies perfect for this time of year!  Julie from Educating Everyone 4 Life has shared this fall word list product with me so I can share it with you!  She's in the process of getting a brand new blog, so I don't have that to share with you today.

The students will have a personalized list of words to help them develop their vocabulary, word recognition skills, and spelling skills.

There is also a blank form for students to add words to their list as needed.

Jen Hayden from Smiling in Second has shared this expanded form pumpkin freebie with me.  It is great practice for your students.

Throwback Thursday - Fact and Opinion Freebie

I am so thankful for everything TPT has allowed me to do.  So I thought I'd bring you another blog freebie today by participating in Throwback Thursday again.

This was originally posted on November 3, 2013.
Wow!  I can't believe it has been 2 weeks since my last post.  Life has been crazy and I haven't had much free time.

My nephew was born on October 21 and that was a wonderful day.  I rushed over to the hospital immediately after school and got there about 20 minutes before he was born.  I was so excited that I made it and didn't have to take a day off school to be there.

Since then I've been spending lots of time with family and work has kept me busy.  Report cards go home on Friday, so I had to finish grading before I could even start on report cards.

I had time to create my product for the November Facebook Frenzy.  The October one was so successful that I decided to participate in the November one.  The Frenzy starts on Friday, November 8th, so be sure to check out my page for some great 2nd grade products!  Click on the boat to get started.
https://www.facebook.com/techieturtleteacher

I also had time to create another Thanksgiving-themed product.  My boyfriend helped me with the idea.  The students have to help the turkeys find their missing feathers.  The feathers are adjectives, nouns, or verbs.  Check out the product at my store for more information!

And now, for what you've all been waiting for!  A freebie!  I have set my Owl Fact and Opinion product as a freebie for my loyal blog followers.  It will be free for a limited time.  Enjoy!  Click on the cover to download it.

Thanks for reading!  Have a wonderful week!
So in the post I said that blog freebie would be free for a limited time.  Well, I guess I changed my mind because it is still free.  And you're in luck!  Go download it today!

What are you thankful for this November?

Freebie - A Trick to Help Your Students Learn to Spell

Do your students struggle to spell correctly?  Is it so bad they don't even remember to put vowels in their words?

My team has been frustrated with our students not using their resources to spell.  We have word walls, we have Quick Words (personal dictionaries kept in desks) and sometimes we brainstorm a list of words on the board.

And we still have horrible spelling mistakes!

But, they're only in 2nd grade!

I know, but I have to help them now.  I'm not requiring them to spell words like bouquet or theoretical, but words like was and they.  Those are words that should be spelled correctly!

After discussing with our literacy coach, we came up with a few strategies to help encourage correct spelling.

First - don't ever fix spelling mistakes on a kid's paper.  They will never learn how to spell it correctly if you always fix it for them.  Don't even circle the misspelled word.  It won't help.  You can point out which line has a spelling mistake, but they have to do the hard part to find the word.

Second - start praising those who are using correct spelling.  Almost to the point of over-praising.  Is that a word?  Over-praising.  I'm using it, so it better be!

So what does over-praising look like?

When my students are writing, I walk around and read what they've written.  I only read a few sentences.  When I see a student who has spelled every single word in those few sentences correctly, I say, "FREEZE!  Johnny is in the spotlight because he has spelled every word correctly!  Way to go Johnny!  Now, everyone get back to work."

Then I move on to the next kid.  I freeze everyone if all words are spelled correctly.  If they aren't, I tell them how many mistakes they have.

And now for the fun part.  I'm going to start handing out these spotlight awards when I spotlight them.  Super easy to fill out.  Just write the kid's name, the date, and the reason why they were spotlighted.

Then the kid gets to take the spotlight certificate home.  Before they do, they get to fill out the spotlight chart hanging up in the room.

Everything is in black and white so I can copy it on colored paper.

Do you want this product?  You're in luck!  You can download it for free by clicking {here}.

How do you encourage your students to be better spellers?
